One who listens
"Man's real need....... is for someone to listen to him, not as a 'patient' but as a human soul. He needs to tell someone of what he thinks, of the bewilderment he encounters when he tries to discover why he was born, how he must live, and where his destiny lies......"
Taylor Caldwell The Man Who Listens (Collins 1961)
Alongside that need to be listened to, may be anxiety of disclosing to another, some of our deepest thoughts, fears and desires. To trust another person enough to share ourselves in this way takes courage. That courage needs to be met with a warm, non-judgemental acceptance so that a genuine relationship can be developed. Within the safety of that confidential relationship, those thoughts and feelings can be gently explored.
